The 7th IOE-BNU International Conference: Innovation in Education and Pedagogy will be held from November 22-23, 2019 at Beijing Normal University in China. Academics, researchers and practitioners in education from around the world are invited to participate in this major international conference in Beijing. Deadline to submit abstracts is 14 June 2019.

Organised in partnership between Beijing Normal University and the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) since 2006, this biennial event provides a dynamic international forum for sharing research and good practice in education.

Educational innovation has become a major issue in many societies around the world as they seek new approaches and novel solutions to problems that have been difficult to resolve, or where social and technological changes may offer new ways forward to improve educational experiences and outcomes. The 7th IOE-BNU joint conference is devoted to understanding different kinds of innovation in education and their prospects for success.

The role of pedagogy, or the contribution of teaching and the teacher in education, has become a particular area for discussion in relation to innovation that will be emphasised at the conference.

Based on these central themes, the conference welcomes applications to present papers in diverse areas based on research that may be empirical or theoretical in nature, focusing mainly on China or the UK or comparative insights, and including other aspects related to educational innovation such as assessment and curriculum.

Key strands:

  • The conference will be organised into three key strands as below, linked broadly to innovation in schools of different types; broad social and cultural issues related to educational innovation; and innovation in institutions of higher education.

  • Applicants are invited to select one of these strands as part of the assessment process for the call for papers, with examples of possible subjects under each strand also provided below.

  • Innovation in teaching and pedagogy (abstracts may include subjects like classroom management; classroom practice; innovative pedagogy and assessment; curriculum change and innovation)
    Pedagogy, culture and society (abstracts may include subjects like critical pedagogy; social histories and pedagogies; education, policy and pedagogy; ethnicity, class, gender and pedagogy; pedagogical theory)
    Innovation and pedagogy in higher education (abstracts may include subjects like teaching in Higher Education (HE); teacher education and pedagogy; pedagogical education in HE; innovative teaching methods in HE; technologies and teaching in HE)

Call for papers

Proposals are welcome from:

  • academics, researchers, Master’s and doctoral students in education, sociology, politics and other relevant disciplines

  • teachers, teacher educators and other educational practitioners

  • professionals working for national or local government (and related agencies and charities).

Contributions are welcome in the following forms:

  • academic papers based on research or scholarship

  • case studies of practice in schools, universities, communities and formal and informal education settings

  • reports of projects and initiatives at local, regional, national or international levels

  • symposia of 3 or 4 papers on the same theme.

All papers will be placed within one of the three academic strands listed above.

Please use these to guide the development of your submission, although the final decision as to which strand accepted papers will be placed it rests with the conference committee.

Submitting a paper

We welcome abstracts in English or Chinese.

Please follow the headings below:

  • Title of Paper

  • Author(s) full names and institutional affiliation

  • Name and email of corresponding author

  • Strand selected: Innovation in Teaching and Pedagogy / Pedagogy, Culture and Society / Innovation and Pedagogy in Higher Education

  • Abstracts in English should be a maximum of 500 words

  • References (no more than six)

The abstract should summarise a full paper, drawing out the salient issues briefly and succinctly.

Research based abstracts should include the following:

  • Context

  • Research questions and/or aims

  • Methodology

  • Key findings

  • Recommendations and/or implications.

  • Practice based abstracts should cover:

  • Context

  • Innovation/intervention/project aims/goals

  • Innovation/intervention/project outline

  • Evidence of impact

  • Recommendations and/or implications.

  • Symposia should include an overview summary and abstracts for each of the papers to be presented.

Submission deadlines

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 14 June 2019. No abstracts received after this date will be considered.
Authors will be notified of the outcome of their abstract submission by 15 July 2019
